Okay, this is monumental.
Erik, for a long time, since well before he was two, knew his letters and numbers. For almost as long, he's known the sounds they made. For over two years he's memorized several words, so he can recognize them on sight, out of context of where he memorized them. That was a good beginning to reading, but not really the real deal. He hadn't, until now, made the connection between the letter sounds and the memorized words. Now, he has. He just read a book he's never read before all by himself, by sounding out the words, most of which were entirely new to him. It's about one step up from "See Spot Run". My son, four years old, has taught himself how to read.

jess, really? cause that's been a complication; who do i get to babysit them for a whole weekend while we go to close on the house, but how do we take them to closing with us? hours and hours of boredom? i'll keep that in mind!
